stories from the farside of the moon
stories from the far side of the moon, choreographed and composed by Baden Hitchcock premiered at the Pulima Arts Festival, Hualien, 2023. This work takes inspiration from a Motu story told by his mum of the moon spirit falling in love with a woman from the village and taking her to the moon and having children together. This work explores how the far side of the moon we never see can be a place where lost stories and history can reside.
It is a personal contemporary ceremony attempting to connect with these lost stories about identity and queerness before colonisation. These intersections of contemporary and traditional identity can also be seen in the music, also composed by Baden, and uses traditional drums and songs from Hanuabada village, Baden and his uncle singing of the moon and moonlight.
