Gida Explorations II
This second iterations of the project Gida Explorations was explored in collaborations with Aejlies Cultural Sami Centre based in Tarnaby, Sweden aswell as Riksteatern - National Swedish Touring Theatre. This development was apart of a five week long Indigenous dance residency initiated by Aejilies called Jårrh. Baden explored ideas of Gida, the Motu word for ember or fire in relation to the concept of ‘Indigenous Futurism’ coined by Grace Dillon. He was interested with how to create sound scores live, inspired by the percussive traditional movements of Kiwai and Torres Strait dancing he used Ableton Live (DAW) to record and manipulate the rhythms being performed and gradually create a sound score. This methodology has strong connection with ideas of ceremony and how in traditional ceremony there is breakdown of the contemporary notions of delineated artforms, Dance, Music, Theatre etc. By playing with time, repetition and technology this exploration is an attempt to destabilise the Western Linear concept of time.
