Anthropocene

Anthropocene is an unofficial term for a unit of geological time showing how humans have altered the planet with various forms of industrial and radioactive materials staring from the 1950s. My graduation work from Victorian College of the Arts, brings into question how traditional cultures can exist under current and social political paradigms. This work is a practise which discovers, researches and questions what nature is and can be, our distinct relationship with subject and object and how perspectives of urban and rural landscapes challenge notions of autonomy in relation to home and place. Concerned at the rising mental health crisis in the younger generation, this work is looking into how we often view cities as prisons that we must escape to take trips to nature. How can we view the city as part of the natural world and will that have an impact on our mental health? Does traditional movement/forms inform your practise or life? How is it relevant to contemporary notions of art? What is the criteria for someone to be an indigenous artist?
